Remember
What is the definition of remembering? Well to put it easy, it is to have a recollection of something. So why is it important to remember? The answer may be self-evident, however it may be different for everybody. For me, it is important to remember because when confronted with a challenge in life, it is imperative to know who loves you, that you're going to be okay, your personal code of conduct, and most importantly, that God will bring you through whatever he places in front of you. I found something interesting while in one of my Priesthood leadership meetings: In 3 Nephi 18:11, it states many times to "remember" or "in remembrance of..." To remember, you first must know. You cannot remember without first knowing. "Always remember me." You know your Heavenly Father. He knows you. Remember that.
In addition to remembering to remember, one scripture that was in the reading got me thinking. John 10:10 "I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly." Of course, one might think "Well how is it that I may live more abundantly?" after reading that. The answer that came to me was also in the reading: To first have integrity. "Where there is integrity, other virtues will follow. Where there is no integrity, other virtues will have no chance of developing." Integrity is an action word. Integrity lies deep within who we are, within all of our choices and actions throughout the day, not just within honesty. There is a difference between being truthful and being true. Truthful is another word for being honest with someone else, yeah? With being true, that is sticking to who you are, being honest with yourself. Not being afraid of the consequences that are a result of who you are. Perhaps now you can see why integrity is the first step to developing other attributes. Can one be reliable if they are not first honest? Can one be sincere while still being deceitful? No. The answer is clear and easy. If you wish to make a difference with a positive impact, be successful, be loved by others, be respected, be accountable, then one must first have integrity.
Do you crave that integrity? I believe that integrity is synonymous with success, and according to Jim Ritchie, there's a formula for that and it goes as follows:
- Get up early
- Work hard
- Get your education
- Find oil (Your talents, ambitions, abilities)
- Make your mark
- Prepare to serve/give back
